Review of Little Shop of Horrors (1986) by Barry N — 03 Aug 2011
Little Shop of Horrors tried to mix the horror genre with comedy. Oh and music too. Now, I understand that this movie is based on a play and that there already was another movie based on the play, but I haven't seen it yet. This movie is really upbeat and almost all of the songs are very catchy, especially one certain one where Steve Martin sings about how evil he is. The film also gives us some very interesting characters whether they're likable or not. We also are asked to empathize with Seymour even though he almost does some of the most horrible things and it works because he's pathetic and he never does lose his likability. The romance does seem a little contrived, but it's overall kind of sweet and enjoyable. The animatronics to make the flower move (or if it's not animatronics please tell me, but that's what I thought it was) look very nice and the hard work the crew put into making this movie shows. This film isn't necessarily a classic or anything like that, but it's still a highly enjoyable musical that mixes horror and comedy very well, but with more emphasis on comedy.
8.2/10.
