Review of Little Shop of Horrors (1986) by James C — 28 Apr 2012
I'd like it if it weren't a musical. This film exemplifies the many things I detest about most musicals-- syrupy, overbearingly plastic, melodramatic, and the most heavy-handed of all humor. They tell you the punch lines before the jokes are allowed to happen.
The attention to details of style make the predictability of the humor all the more disappointing, because it could have been awesome without the Disneyish music. I saw a classic-style stage show of 'Guys and Dolls' recently (and again, I'm not into musicals) which was head-and-shoulders above this film in every way applicable except budget and star recognition.
