Review of Little Otik (2001) by Marion R — 22 Jan 2009
Somewhere between Pinocchio and Little Shop of Horrors, "Little Otik" is everything I had hoped for in a feature-length Svenkmajer film. His trademark creepy stop-motion, unnervingly cartoony sound editing, odd camera direction and gruesome fascination with food are all present. What really makes it all work, however, is the spunky little girl whom we follow through this cinematic funhouse.
While not as great as Svenkmajer's shorts (a few of which cameo briefly as commercials in this film), "Little Otik" still manages to be simultaneously hilarious and horrifying. Less memorable than "Alice," perhaps, but a far better film, on the whole.
