Review of Little Otik (2001) by Esther B — 18 Apr 2010
This is my first Svankmajer film. I thought it was inventive in many ways. There were many unsettling and often grotesque images and I was impressed by the calibre of the close-ups - people's mouths, their full spoons of gruel etc.
The fairytale element probably doesn't play as well to my English sensibility but I was just about kept interested in the overlong second half. A distinct vision, no doubt, but emotionally I thought it fell a little short.
