Review of Little Miss Sunshine (2006) by Rainer K — 02 Jul 2012
For about 90 minutes Little Miss Sunshine is about an utterly annoying 7-year old girl and her weird/stupid family... and then, there comes young Olive's dance routine that should win her the beauty pageant and make her Little Miss Sunshine.
This dance number is hilarious - I laughed my ass off actually. The rest of the film - not so much. Little Miss Sunshine proves again that Americans can't handle black comedy. I prefer my very own Austria or the Brits for this kind of dark humour.
Not even the likable cast, with Steve Carell and Alan Arkin stealing the show, can make up for the comedic mistones.
I didn't saw this for a long time - just because I didn't want to... and I was right. Little Miss Sunshine is a kind of film that's so fancy that even Sundance falls in love with it but marketable enough to make it a big crowd pleaser (it has an awfully annoying child in it - and a coke-snorting grandpa - that helps). FWIW films like that should stay in Utah!
PS: I'd like to get some toy version of this VW bus, best with some toy figures of the film's characters pushing it - iconic picture :).
