Review of Little Men (2016) by Darren M — 18 Sep 2016
Clocking in at just an hour and 20 minutes, Little Men tries to tell a novel length story within the confines of a novella. This felt incomplete, it felt rushed. This rush to the finish line left the whole piece too open ended for me.
I don't necessarily require a nicely wrapped ending, in fact, that can often be a good thing. But this felt incomplete in every sense. I had no time to emotionally connect with any characters and although Ira Sach's may live by the rule "less is more", less here, for me, was a letdown.
One upside? The young actors did a great job. Theo Taplitz, a filmmaker himself, has some wonderful short films on Vimeo & Michael Barbieri reminded me of a young John Travolta. These kids are going places.
They are the ones to watch.
