I remember really wanting to see this one in the wake of Silence of the Lambs--actually, Alka, if you're reading this, you may remember renting it from your dad's store. It's a lot darker and edgier than I remember it in terms of the music, lighting, and of the young protagonist's rather bleak world.

The little boy's (Adam Hann-Byrd's) performance is excellent, but a lot of how you react to the movie depends on how you feel about the Foster character and direction. IMO she's a little too over-the-top and a little too hopelessly cleaned-up for the part, but she does give it her all. Because she directed it--if I may be pardoned a smattering of "biographical fallacy," the film is not about being a common or garden child genius but about being a lonely and precocious child in an adult world.

I could have done without the whole Harry Connick JR character and sequences; shoot me. And you could probably have done without this whole slapdash review, but it's better than Tetris ... right?
