Review of Little Children (2006) by Rocknblues 8 — 02 Jan 2010
Little Children is the 2nd film by actor turned director Todd Field. Todd takes a page of the Sam Mendes book in this slow developing look at the selfish fearful ways of suburbs people. And make no mistake, these aren't the kind of folks you root for. There people are not the worst people in the world, but they're selfish behavior often has the sad but realistic feel of the modern American.
I can't quite decide if this or In The Bedroom is Todd's best film, but I would probably put them both in my top 100 of the decade. The performances are great, and the film takes it's time to examine all the characters fairly well. The bits of dark comedy are welcomed also. It's thoughtful and it is about more than just two selfish lovers. The best performance actually comes from Jackie Earle Haley who stars as a pedophile just trying to live a quiet life, but can't escape the wrath of the locals.
Little Children is funny, sad, fairly realistic and brutally honest. It's a film all film lovers should check out.
