Review of Little Children (2006) by Barry P — 04 Mar 2009
A steamy romance that was doomed from the start. Brad (Patrick Wilson) has commitment issues. Sarah (Kate Winslett) has a neglectful husband with a dirty little secret. The two of them provide the primary child-care for their little tykes and one knows where this story is going from the moment they meet.
However predictable the story, the journey is more than half the fun. This viewer knows of no other actress as comfortable in her skin (and little else) as Ms. Winslett. Hers is a classic beauty, and I can't get enough of her.
One had to wonder how the two of them were thinking they would survive when push came to shove. She has a degree in English Lit, and he can't seem to pass the bar. Neither one has a job. In the end, choices are made by both of them and we are made aware of the fragility of life.
Although this was not exactly "fun" to watch, it was well done and the emotional journeys of each of the characters was wholly believable. The side story involving a sex-offender and a disgraced former cop provided some additional tension and became the narrative fulcrum on which the story turned.
