Review of Little Children (2006) by Thomas D — 24 Jul 2010
Movies like Little Children really make us think about the different sides of being human. We are not superhero's or supreme beings, we are human beings. Many of us may live in a middle class, urban community and relate to these kinds of films.
When I first saw the movie 'American Beauty' it made me think of this same 'humane' concept. The movie was so real and touched so close to home that it was almost scary! Well that's the same way Little Children is.
All of the acting was superb. It's the kind of acting that sucks you into an urban scenario. You almost feel like you are these peoples neighbors or somebody who lives in the neighborhood. So props to the acting from Jennifer Connelly and Kate Winslet and the rest of the cast.
Some of the movies best and most haunting acting can be experience through the character of Ronnie played by Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, Nightmare on Elm Street), a registered sex offender in a small "everybody knows everybody" town.
It really will let you see the pre-acting that earned Haley his role as Freddy in the new Nightmare on Elm Street remake. The movies realism is uncanny and the fallacies of marriage and new found love make it a very 3D film.
Lots of emotion and realism. The movie shows that there are greater evils than just a local town pervert by how Noah Emmerich's character Larry, a discharged police officer, takes his aggression and anger out on somebody who is already labeled as a bad person like Ronnie.
Later he realizes the error of his ways, showing a very human character in the end. A very powerful movie. 4-starz.
