Review of Little Caesar (1931) by Brian H — 26 Feb 2009
This really is the gangster movie that started it all (along with Public Enemy). The story might be a bit flimsy, but the attitude and the performances make this a really exciting classic. Edward G. Robinson's aggressive delivery has inspired so many since and his performance as the first anti-hero, Rico is riveting.
I liked the interplay with Joe the dancer trying to get out of the gang and that subplot is certainly more interesting and easier to follow than the gang wars. But overall, there is great romance, exciting action sequences, and a mobster you love to hate.
Anybody who is a fan of gangster films, must see this one.
