Review of Little Buddha (1993) by Henk E — 14 Oct 2009
Two movies in one.... The one (much better) story concerns a Tibetan monk in search of the reincarnation of his teacher. He finds a possible candidate in Seattle, a blond American boy and he had to convince the boy's non-Buddhist parents that this is the case.
The modern day half of the movie is by far superior to the rest of the film. Bridget Fonda is great as the curious, open to everything mother. And the film really offers food for though in terms of modern day religion and and the prospect of reincarnation.
The second story concerns the story of prince Siddhatha, the man who eventually became Baddha. I found the story presented more as a fairytale than anything else. I would have loves if they took the subject matter a little more seriously, rather than make it look like sugarcoated indian myth. The director never delves into emotional side of the character and the scenes feels rushed and two dimensional!
Casting Keanu Reeves as the Indian prince was also a horrible idea. He just looks stupid!
Having said all this, the movie is shot beautifully, but in the end there is very little emotion present in what could have been an brilliant depiction of the story of Buddha.
