Review of Little Boy (2015) by Kyle B — 29 Dec 2015
It has the best intentions but it has too much going on at once. I think that the race relations story line was the strongest storyline in this but it was crammed in with a father at war/mother grieving story, a spiritual journey story, and a bullying due to how short the boy was story that did not mesh together well.
The score is abrasive at times and some of the writing is just tacky and Kevin James' involvement with this movie is just stupid. Emily Watson gives a strong performance as does Tom Wilkinson but he is rarely bad.
The little boy seems to have a promising future and David Henre was pretty good here even if his writing of his character let him down. I also really liked Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa and like I said I wish this movie was more about his relationship with the little boy during WWII when American/Japanese relationships were not in a good place.
This movie came out in April and seeing it in December adds a bit of mirroring to what is going on now with Americans' relationships with American Muslims but if only the focus of this movie was stronger to make it worthy of a talking point in today's news.
