Review of Little Boy (2015) by Vicki F — 04 May 2015
A beautiful movie, with storytelling and cinematography that is both warmly stylized and yet spare enough to not be overdone. The actors give first rate performances. Don't listen to the professional critics! Where is their love of creativity, imagination and whimsy when it comes to telling this story?? This is, among other things, a story of difficult things as seen through the eyes of a young boy.
He wants to understand how to make sense of seemingly senseless things in his life. So of course there is a little fanciful storytelling and playful humor. The story does not shy away from difficult subjects, or trivialize faith.
It also doesn't hit the viewer over the head with it, as some of the critics have complained. Instead it respects the audience, assuming we can figure out that parts of the story are told as allegory.
As of this posting the critics have panned it at 17%, while audiences have loved it at 88%. It really is a positive and uplifting film about love, family, faith and friendship.
