Review of Little Big Man (1970) by John B — 30 Sep 2010
I'm surprised I have not rated this film yet! This was one of the first Westerns I ever viewed that made an impression on me and still holds up well. Director Arthur Penn, who passed away a couple of days ago, stated that Little Big Man was his greatest achievement. It certainly is one of the five best Westerns of the 1970s. How Penn was able to balance comedy and tragedy seems impossible to achieve but he did.
Dustin Hoffman's Jack Crabb is one of his very best roles. Aging from a teenager to a 121 year old man (makeup and all) worked out perfectly. Chief Dan George received a well deserved Oscar nomination of his role as Old Lodge Skins, Crabb's adoptive Cheyenne grandfather.
