Review of Little Ashes (2008) by Emily L — 20 May 2009
The film's done really sensitively, and the whole forbidden love/running away from it/hiding behind masks stuff was handled very well. It did seem slightly weighted against Dali though- he was protrayed as a bit of a gutless type with a huge ego, and though he was put forward as a genius the film didn't explore why he couldn't face up to reality, both emotional and political.
There were vague instances of him zoning about and remembering things, but they never explored whatever past traumas made him hide behind his art. As the film was way too long and plodding anyway, they could have fitted that stuff in and he would've come across more sympathetic.
Still, the film certainly looked good, but why was it in English?
