Review of Little Ashes (2008) by Mike M — 25 Jul 2009
Fans of R.Patz must see his pre-Twilight projects. After Harry Potter's Goblet of Fire (Cedric Diggory), Rob stars in this pretentious film about a re-imagined romantic friendship between Salvador Dali (Rob, playing a self-proclaimed genius and all aroudn annoying poser) and Federico Garcia Llorca, poet extraordinaire, played with solemn intensity by Spanish Javier Beltran, probably the best thing about this film.
Although this is an earnest film with deep regard for the artists portrayed (Luis Bunuel is the third part of this Spanish triumvirate in 30's Madrid), director Paul Morrison (surprisingly nominated for an Oscar previously ?!!) pulls a Wayne Wang and makes an unintentionally hilarious "so bad, it's good" movie, full of weirdness from R.
Patz himself as well as awkwardly staged scenes and set pieces. Very very funny for a "drama period piece" !: ).
