Review of Listen Up Philip (2014) by Ryan B — 30 Oct 2014
Smart, challenging, and ultimately rewarding film about creativity and isolation. On the surface this film channels Baumbach and Anderson but if you dig deeper there is a more daring bite to the characters and narrative structure than either of those "high brow for the masses" filmmakers have ever attempted.
Screenwriting 101 dictates protagonists to be likable and redeemable. This film does neither and does it with uncompromising success. One of the best films of the year.
