Review of Listen Up Philip (2014) by Leon B — 18 Jul 2015
Listen Up Philip is not for everybody. It revolves around an arrogant and egotistical central character who is, for general moviegoers, hard to relate to. But one thing people tend to forget is that this is a movie about flawed people; like all of us, each character ---whether they are engaging or not--- suffers from their own problems, and the film does a wonderful job at projecting these issues with brutal honesty.
And I have this weird fascination toward flawed, unlikable characters. I've always thought that they are more humane than a lot of movie characters we see in mainstream films. It reminded me a lot of early Woody Allen films and some of Noah Baumbach films, both of which I'm a huge fan of.
Loved the performances (Jason Schwartzman and Elizabeth Moss are terrific) and the cinematography. I liked Listen Up Philip, and if you don't like it, well, sucks to be you.
