Review of Listen to Me Marlon (2015) by Liesl E — 15 May 2016
The film has en ethereal quality, images of different moments in the great actors life float on and off the screen as his disembodied voice narrates his own story. This approach means that detail is lost and at times, like for example the difficulties he had with the Mutiny on The Bounty shoot, you are desperate for the focus to linger, to expand the story but instead it moves quickly on to the next chapter of Brandos life.
Can you cram an entire career, personal life, troubled childhood and death into an hour and a half and do an icons story justice ?The other problem is that hearing only Brandos voice, with no other interviews or talking heads we don't see the counterpoint to Brandos reflections and thus it feels unbalanced and again lacking in the detail in those key moments of his life.
