Review of Lion (2016) by Jeff W — 11 Mar 2017
Let me start out by saying... the Weinstein Company knows how to crank out a good tearjerker. As such, a fair bit of this film progresses somewhat slowly to develop the story, but in a way that makes one feel almost as lost as the main character in search of his biological family.
It forces the viewer to reflect on the main character's past alongside him, as illustrated by key flashbacks that coincide with his present life. Dev Patel gives his most mature and heartfelt performance to date, and Nicole Kidman adequately balances the task motherhood with accepting the emotional baggage that comes with adoption, knowing full well how difficult it can be.
But Sunny Pawar is probably who steals the show, given that his youthful presence is felt from the opening scene and lingers till the closing credits. On the whole, this film demonstrates the strength of the family bond, regardless of nationality and language of origin.
Just be sure to come prepared with a few tissues first.
