Review of Lion (2016) by Orlando O — 14 May 2017
Gripping, heartfelt and deeply moving, "Lion" is a true story that deserves to be seen. An inspiring story of one man's search for home, it is one of the most moving films of the year. Beautifully shot, powerfully acted and engrossing from start to finish, it manages to do justice to a true story.
Although it isn't easy to bring to life a true story of an inspiring individual, the film succeeds. It is due in large part to the powerful performances. Sunny Parwar and Dev Patel, the actors who play the young and older version of Saroo are terrific.
Parwar is marvelous, and carries the first half of the film through his emotional expressions. Patel, on the other hand, commands the second half of the film as the older Saroo. Despite an engrossing first-half, "Lion" is slightly overlong and drags towards the end.
Nevertheless, it is an inspirational film that left me in a puddle of tears by the end. Few films, if any, have the ability to do that.
