Review of Lion (2015) by Jake B — 15 Feb 2017
It's very rare a movie comes along that makes you feel a range of emotions so strong, like "Lion" did for me. At one, you see this little, adorable Indian boy, smiling and happy about just being alive, and you can't fathom someone bad would happen to him.
And then it does, and you being to question humans and their ability for evil. But the movie isn't all tragedy, as it has some of the most uplifting scenes you'll see all year as well. Without giving anything away, I cried with happiness, balled my fists in anger, covered my eyes in shame, and laughed with disbelief and confusion, all in the span of the 2 hour movie.
The acting is superb, and knowing it's a true story makes it even more emotionally relatable. Saroo's story is a bittersweet one, but it's something I am so glad I didn't miss, and it has me still thinking about it the next day as I write this.
This film moved me in some way I can't describe, whether it be that I'm ashamed of the despicable nature of humanity, impressed by the stamina of this little boy, or grateful there are amazing adoptive parents out there taking unfortunate children out of horrible situations and giving them fantastic lives.
..who knows. This film has made me think, and appreciate where I come from and what I have and have not had to go through. I very, very much hope this wins the Oscar for best picture. Please see this movie.
You'll appreciate your family just a little more afterwards.
