Review of Lion (2015) by Mark D — 05 Jun 2017
A movie that could have been so close to perfect if they had just fixed some pacing issues, and stopped confusing us with the timeline.
Regardless, it's a very telling story of something that happens all too often. Especially is less sophisticated(advanced? Modern?) societies. The beginning scenes of India are suffocating for a person like me. So many people jammed into what looks like a not very sanitary environment. The train station is nuts, and the way these poor Indian people live is just sad.
Dav Patel is very good as the grown up child who was lost. Everyone else is just kind of there doing their parts, but we never really connect with them much.
I do wonder why it took him 24 years to suddenly decide to try and find his family. Did he try before this? They don't indicate that he did.
Then I wonder why it took another 2+ years of research when the obvious answer was what did it it in the end. Why didn't he start there? I don't know.
It can be an emotional story, but not the way the director and writers obviously wanted us to feel.
I just never connected with the characters to feel enough.
Whats crazy is that this IS a true story. Apparently thousands of kids are lost in India every year. What a sad situation.
