Review of Lincoln (2012) by Gavin M — 21 Mar 2015
Well hello boys and girls. I'm basically gonna lay it down for you like this....nobody and I mean nobody! Could have played Abraham Lincoln other than Daniel Day-Lewis. The man truly brought to life the 16th President of the United States, and without a doubt and probably the greatest President that has ever lived.
Leadership. That's what the movie is about. Something every President that takes office should take notice to when watching this movie in fact it should be a HIGHLY recommendation for every President that takes office to watch this movie if they want to do the best possible job leading this country.
I say leading because that is exactly what Lincoln did in Steven Spielberg's historian masterpiece "Lincoln." Steven Spielberg has gone from family movies to making himself the greatest historian director that will ever live.
The man has a natural eye for history the way Scorsese does for the mob movies. Say what you want about Spielberg but the man is good....DAMN GOOD. Every time I see his name pop up on a movie trailer the chills that go down my spine are something words cannot describe.
He is master. A true master of his craft and knows how to make a damn good movie. I once saw Steven Spielberg in an interview saying that the one person he envies because he has such a style as a director is Martin Scorsese and that the reason is because he feels he doesn't have a style, he feels he is stylist, but doesn't have a style that Scorsese does and when I saw the video I was shocked that Spielberg would say that because he does have a style, and that is that he is EPIC.
Epic to the bone! There's not one Spielberg movie you can name that you walked away from not saying to yourself "Spielberg man!" Because he knows how to impact an audience. And that is why Scorsese and Spielberg to me are the two greatest directors that have ever lived, but I will say Terrence Malick lately is coming in a close third, but will see after viewing "Knight of Cups" which I am deeply invested into seeing when it comes out.
But other than that, I also have to say that "Lincoln" is also filled with terrific and I mean TERRIFIC supporting performances from Sally Field who plays Mary Todd Lincoln, James Spader who is an awesome comic relief in this movie.
Also Joseph Gordon Levitt and David Strathairn are an enormous presence in the movie as well, but the real scene stealer in this movie is Tommy Lee Jones. This man is truly, TRULY another great actor as nobody else could have played Thadddeus Stevens, but him as he truly kills it in every scene he is in and to the scene especially when he and DDL come together in the middle of the movie to talk about passing the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery is one for the ages as your are literally in the presence of greatness watching those two act together, it really is something.
