Review of Lincoln (2012) by Andrew B — 26 Mar 2016
As a huge fan of Daniel Day Lewis and Steven Spielberg and throw in the fact that I love American History, especially the topic of the Civil War, maybe you would think I made some sort of mistake giving Lincoln only 2 stars.
No mistake though. Daniel Day Lewis once again dominates another role. He is absolutely mesmerizing as our 16th President. I am guessing that if there was known footage of President Lincoln it would look just like Day Lewis did in this movie.
But that is pretty much the extent of my experience with this film. Spielberg took a polarizing subject of man and maybe the most important time in America's history. He could have chosen so many different things to focus on, mainly the civil war, which yes he does touch on.
But he chose to focus his attention on the passing of an amendment. Certainly an important amendment, but come on !! You have the civil war and the assassination as being by far the most interesting parts of Lincolns story and he went with the passing of an amendment.
Sure, its somewhat interesting, but not nearly as interesting as other topics in this era. Whether he was trying to be super smart or dare I say, super liberal in choosing what the focus on, it just did not make an interesting movie.
Lincoln just drags on and is downright boring. The only thing that kept me awake during this movie was the acting by Daniel Day Lewis. Yes what they focused on was a very important thing in our history, but it is not for a movie featuring probably the greatest actor of our generation and one of the greatest directors of the last century.
