Review of Limelight (1952) by Lorin G — 29 Jun 2008
Sad, but with heart. Chaplin gives a pretty good talking performance that has its familiar eccentricities, but with an undercurrent of tired sadness, making it often more dramatic than comedic. Chaplin's dealt with some pretty serious subject matter in his movies which is contrasted with very funny physical comedy.
Much of the comedy in LIMELIGHT is verbal and more bittersweet than it is laugh out loud. Consistently amusing without ever being hilarious. The result is pretty affecting, especially if you're a Chaplin fan.
