Review of Lilting (2014) by Ws W — 07 Sep 2014
I used to like this kind of film vibes so much. The more I have watched, the more I began to figure out its monotonousness out of the same genre however.
Junn, the Cambodian-Chinese mother character, played by Cheng Pei Pei is almost an evil old witch being depicted here; her confession at the end is abrupt yet hardcore preaching. Ben Whishaw's Richard seems to be the protagonist but which was actually all blank & hollow inside out. The endless translation scenes all the way is getting so tiresome & really annoying.
So bizarre family & sexuality matters are always getting awkward when in the hands of Asian-ethnic directors.
