Review of Like Water for Chocolate (1992) by Joanna N — 03 Aug 2007
This film is enchanting and hasn't one slow moment. My only gripes are that I felt the sinister deaths of some characters tainted the romance, and I felt the role of John was poorly cast. Consequently he was not as convincing as he could have been.
However I loved the climax of the film, which portrayed the most bizarre death I have ever seen in film; suicide by match ingestion. There is something satisfying about the combination of pariah and pyre.
Perhaps I was content to see Pedro and Tita die rather than live out their days living happily together because whilst captivated by their romance I found my sympathy for them marred by their selfishness.
Nevertheless, I very much enjoyed this film.
