Review of Like Water for Chocolate (1992) by Alex B — 24 Jan 2010
My guess is that this is a wonderful, poetic book, and that the metaphors didn't translate well to the screen when given a too-literal interpretation, but for whatever underlying reason, this movie is absolutely hilarious.
The absolutely unreasonable situations and plot twists are presented in a far too-serious, incredibly sober manner, and the dubbing (like all dubbing) is an unintended joke. However, this is actually still a wonderful film full of interesting storylines and lots of delicious food.
The balance between legitimate beauty and absurdly over-the-top Mexicanness is precisely what I love about this movie, and while I don't think that I think of it the way critics and most of its other supporters do, I love it all the same.
