Review of Like Water for Chocolate (1992) by Christopher S — 03 Dec 2010
Definitely one of the best Spanish language based films I have ever seen. The passion between Tita and Pedro was excellent, as well as the on-screen chemistry. I thought when I first heard of the film, it was either going to be a very long telenovela with nudity or a softcore Mexican porn.
It was a cross between the two with excellent background on antiquated Mexican tradition. This film was not just about breaking tradition but also about finding one's true identity, in this case, Tita finding herself as her own woman.
It could have used more of Laura Esquivel's book, such as bringing in more recipes than the Christmas rolls and the quails with rose petal sauce but no matter. Very good and passionate film.
