The view of a slice of Japanese life offset, somewhat, the slowly paced plot. It got more interesting near the end. Then it suddenly went in an utterly jarring and unnecessary direction, with a sudden end that I found completely unsatisfying.
It is rare for me to leave before the credits have rolled, but I left immediately. I rate this as a failure in film making.
