Review of Like Mike (2002) by Evan C — 08 Jun 2015
With a story that's so cheesy it works, you, along with NBA fans, young and old, will surely have a fun time watching Like Mike, which includes fresh acting and a good lesson.
Bow Wow, known then as Lil Bow Wow, made a successful film debut, as the leading actor for Calvin could have easily been a mistake. He seemed so relaxed and pumped on camera that he looked as if he could have re-shot the film all over again, no problem.
Like Mike, being in my point of view a children's cult film, somehow worked in a way I'll never understand. I guess the flow of the film went in the perfect direction, because the film was so close to going off the deep end and being considered a plain, bad movie.
I mentioned that NBA fans would love Like Mike. This reminds me of Marvel's The Avengers (2012). If you aren't a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, chances are, you will not understand or be interested in The Avengers and anything they do. In Like Mike, however, you do not have to understand a thing about basketball or the NBA. There's a coach, a team, a ball, and a loving kid who turns the court upside down.
Like Mike is a movie that includes humor, love, and a great group of characters that you will probably be thinking about the next day after you first watch the movie, as they are all memorable.
