Review of Like Crazy (2011) by Kishanth J — 16 Feb 2012
Sometimes the stars align and the ingredients of a film become so much more than the sum of their parts. Such a film is Like Crazy, whose aching beauty lingers long after the closing credits. The chemistry between its leads, Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones, is the kind that comes along once in a blue moon.
They look good together, their rapport feels so natural and you really believe they are falling in love with each other. The two leads are the film's chief blessing, but by no means the only thing it has going for it.
The direction is subtle and intimate and the script treats well worn scenarios in a way that never veers into cliché. Anyone who's tried to make a go at a long distance relationship will relate to the situations portrayed, and in particular the vicissitudes of young love come across as painfully and euphorically real.
This is small budget American indie cinema at its best.
