Review of Like Crazy (2011) by Khoi L — 23 Mar 2012
Not too crazy about this one. The main thing is I don't really feel much for the characters. Jacob is kind of unlikeable actually. I don't see them as head-over-heels crazy about each other. I felt like they mostly brought their troubles on themselves because Anna overstays her visa and then acts shocked when it comes back to bite her at customs. She couldn't wait two and a half months to come back to the U.S. and now the audience is supposed to feel for them? This is a post 9/11 America, people! I didn't feel sorry for them, and this indifference to their plight probably goes back to me not buying that these two are soul-mates. I didn't think they had chemistry really.
The film relies on choppy montages to show the passing of time, and show the main characters snuggling and hanging out. It frequently cuts back and forth between past and present. The problem with that is that sometimes it was hard to tell what was past and what was present. Sometimes there wasn't a clear distinction. I think it wants to be "Blue Valentine" a little, trying to show a more realistic portrayal of love and relationships. But it isn't "Blue Valentine" in the least.
I'd say skip it. You're not missing anything.
