Review of Like Crazy (2011) by Raymond W — 13 Oct 2012
Like Crazy was one of the big hits out of 2011's Sundance but it never caught on much with mainstream audiences. It's not too difficult to see why. At its core it's a movie about long distance relationships and the variables/consequences associated with them, capably shot with consumer equipment and filled with quiet moments.
Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin each give commendable performances, especially considering how most of the dialogue was improvised on the spot, and the two should have long careers ahead of them. Like Crazy's problem is not with acting, rather it's with the two characters they play and the at times infuriating lack of logic it bestows upon them.
Suffice to say, without giving too much away, their actions continually prove wishy washy at best, and there's some knots thrown into their relationship that make little to no sense. So when the movie ends on an ambiguous note, and since this is an indie love story this should come as a shock to no one, I just didn't particularly care one way or the other anymore.
It's a shame because Jones and Yelchin do such a great job, but unfortunately for them the material isn't totally there this time.
