Review of Like Crazy (2011) by Sapphire G — 27 Jan 2013
Based on poster, title, and synopsis alone, I didn't expect such a deep look into human behavior and interaction. The thrills and hopefulness and heartbreak of love, seldom explored truthfully in most movies, here are depicted masterfully, unidealized.
The most revealing moments are, as in real life, unspoken: shown in gestures, facial expressions, glances; shown in actions. There is also the reality that maybe, just maybe, despite declarations of love and probably even genuine feelings of love, one of the parties involved in the relationship is not as invested and willing to make sacrifices as the other may be, and thus the situation becomes even more difficult.
The ending is brilliant in its ambiguity and, again, unspoken insight. In the beautiful final scene, Jacob and Anna seem to be wondering: "do we even want this anymore..." Their lives have changed, they have changed.
.. there's the possibility that their feelings for each other have changed as well. They actually spent more time apart, and even with their other partners (this is particularly true in Jacob's case) than getting to know each other.
Maybe all this time they had idealized each other and their relationship and the foundations of their love? Or maybe, it was all worth it and they will figure it out together. This is what the movie very effectively leaves to our interpretation and imagination.
