Review of Like Crazy (2011) by Dov D — 10 Mar 2013
Although it's no 'Romeo and Juliet,' indie film 'Like Crazy' delivers a good deal of drama that revolves around star-crossed lovers that must learn to survive a long distance relationship.
The film features a small cast led by Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones, who star as average students who meet at school in Los Angeles and fall in love. When a visa violation gets in the way of their relationship, they are pushed to the brink.
Among 'Crazy's strengths are its casual filming style and vulnerability. There is nothing glamorous about Yelchin's and Jones' characters, Jacob and Anna, and that works to their advantage.
The two of them are simple and real, not the usual fresh, Hollywood idealized young couple. While their relationship is being tested, Jacob and Anna never really let go of each other, even if it really makes sense for them to do so.
Although she is hardly in it, Jennifer Lawrence is a familiar face who brightens up the few scenes in which she appears. The film does not drag on, and there are very few dull moments thanks to all the drama transpiring onscreen.
It may not be a "must see" film, but 'Like Crazy' is a cool change of pace in a world with much more stylized similar movies.
