Review of Like Crazy (2011) by Rob L — 29 May 2012
I was drawn to this having been subject to some of the same anxieties during a transatlantic relationship, not to mention a little bending of the rules, visa wise. I stayed within the law but the female protagonist of this relatively inconsequential drama should perhaps have popped across the border to Tijuana at the very least - her decision to flout the regulations ending up with all manner of heartache.
A drawback of the film is lack of likeability of the male lead - hypocritical and selfish if perhaps realistically portrayed - the naivete and sheer youth of the star crossed lovers is convincing. Equally, the competing love interests are slam one's fist through the TV annoying even if a party scene in a cool LA gaff is punctuated by a lo-fi techno combo very much in tune with the zeitgeist as dictated by the soundtrack to Drive and the Chromatics. As for the posh boy English kid Felicity Jones hooks up with, he does provide the film's most cringeworthy moment with a mindblowingly embarrassing speech to his girlfriend's parents.
Decent enough and potential common ground for those in relationships where tastes can differ.
