Devastatingly beautiful. If you have been in this situation or not, you and feel the emotions and see the longing in them. The way it was filmed has as much to do with the films success as the dialogue and the music.
In a general sense, the variations from your typical love story are slim, but the way it is presented makes it work better than those others. Also, the large focus on just the two of them, and the chemistry they have all makes Like Crazy a very good film.
