Review of Lightyear (2022) by Calvincrack — 17 Jun 2022

Lightyear starts strong but runs out of fuel long before the credits roll. The animation is always up to the task, but the screenplay could have used more work. My main frustration with the film is the ‘fool’ character introduced in the second half who continually makes terrible mistakes that nearly get the entire team killed.

If this had happened once I would have blown it off as character-building comic relief, but it happens so often that the entire plot comes to rely on it for inciting incident. Also this character offers a lot of sarcastic/bumbling comic relief that wasn’t necessary in a film that was doing fine in the first half with a more story driven, sincere approach to humor (see: Sox).

All that said, I do like the concept of the film and appreciate the hard work that went into it and still feel there is a lot to like here.
