Review of Lights Out (2016) by Movie M — 01 Feb 2017
I have to give credit where credit is due - "Lights Out" takes a simple and uncomplicated premise, and turns it into an entertaining thriller that will keep its audience on the edge of their seat.
A major thing I look for in horror movies nowadays is the amount of jump scares it uses, and how much it relies on those to scare the audience. "Lights Out" does use jump scares, however they're not used to the point where the psychological impact the story has on you is just taken away.
I was honestly more scared of the dark for a few days after watching this movie, as it's simplicity relates to a real life scenario, and hits home to many people who have a fear of the unknown. As for the acting, Teresa Palmer (Rebecca) does a good job, but I would say the best acting in this movie would have to go to Maria Bello (Sophie), who had to play the role of a woman who is losing it, and believes she can talk to her friend who has been dead for years.
I'll give it to the actors of the horror genre, acting in horror movies is not easy, especially since the plots are more unrealistic than other movies, but for the bad rep it gets, "Lights Out" had great acting compared to the others in the horror movie crowd.
In the end, "Lights Out" is an enjoyable, exciting horror movie, that has the right blend of deep meaning and jump scares, using it's simplicity to its advantage, and is worth watching if you're bored.
