Review of Lifeboat (1944) by John W — 17 Oct 2009
Excessively propagandistic, but still surprisingly effective. The technical prowess of presenting a coherent film in such a tiny space, and still putting in a cameo appearance, is remarkable.
It's a great film on most levels. Hitchcock highlights the moral bankruptcy of the "allies" by portraying the Nazi's well for much of the film; whilst making us forget why these people are in the lifeboat in the first place...
In the end the iniquity of the Nazi's is highlighted, the Americans then promptly murder him leaving us with nothing but moral ambiguity.
The failure of this film to resolve the moral question it asks is, in my opinion, it's sole real flaw. However this is not enough to disqualify it for four stars.
