Review of Lifeboat (1944) by Matthew D — 20 Feb 2016
The central conceit works elegantly to foment interactions between a mix of characters trying to survive in an impossible situation and Hitchcock once again perfectly places the audience to feel not only witness to, but involved in the proceedings, as we feel compelled to pass judgement on their opinions and decisions, like a silent extra occupant of the boat.
The result is a great study of human nature, both as it always is throughout history, and as it was in the period of turmoil in which it was made; constantly shifting yet never truly transforming.
