Review of Life of Pi (2012) by Cory D — 30 Mar 2014
Never read the book, and really knew nothing about this going in it except for that it was about a boy and his tiger. It starts off very slow, and until the very end of the movie it was hard to understand why a lot of the stuff in the beginning was even necessary. Then once it gets to the meat of the "story," which really also didn't have much apparent significance other than telling what seemed to be a simple tale of survival and codependency, it was at the very least entertaining. Also beautiful to watch. Even then, I found the CGI and the little storytelling interludes distracting at times.
But god, that ending. It makes all of those pieces come together in a way that made me understand why everything was necessary and deliberate. I love a movie that makes you think. I didn't expect this to go anywhere near that category. Then BAM, they hit you in the last couple of minutes and then the credits roll. And now I'm certain it's a movie I'll want to rewatch to see it through different eyes. And I'm equally certain I'll be thinking about it for a long time to come.
