Review of Life of Pi (2012) by Kyle C — 30 Jul 2014
Visual brilliance, but what else would you expect from a "unfilmable" book?
Everything looks so gorgeous! Even if some of it might be unnecessary (like what was the point of that whole deserted island thing?) it is still amazing to look at. The tiger and other animals look ridiculously real.
Now usually this kind of visual brilliance leads to a weaker story. This story, however, stacks up pretty well. With the exception of, like I mentioned previously, some pointless plot elements, this story is pretty intriguing. It throws you for a loop or two (that ending made my head explode). I also liked the conflicts Pi has to face (props to the actor for an awesome performance. His family gets just enough screen time to make you feel bad about what happens to them and feel Pi's emotional damage.
I will say this film is a bit lengthy, but with fantastic visuals and an interesting story, I'm not complaining.
8/10 Amazing.
