Review of Life of Brian (1979) by Lauren R — 14 Feb 2010
This is my favourite of all the Python films; and I think it's because it's the cleverest. I loved this film, I loved the satire and the parody. The humour in it is childish and fun - but always with an edge of tongue in cheek.
It doesn't have the unsatisfying ending of Holy Grail and doesn't feel fragmented like Meaning of Life - this feels like a finished product, and that is probably why it is the most mainstream accessible of the Python films.
When you add in my militant aethiesm and intense dislike of religion in general you can see why this film appeals. It's clever, it's slick, it's childish and its fun - everything religion isn't.
I would urge everyone to watch this film - if you don't you're missing out on quality and fun in equal measure. To summarise I shall quote from one of my favourite peep show episodes 'Take that god, shove that up your toga you big beardy kill joy'.
- I think the Pythons would approve of the sentiment and the subtlety. Now before the pope comes knocking on my door demanding an apology for being a very naughty boy, lets all whistle 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life'.
