Review of Life of Brian (1979) by David M — 27 Oct 2011
"He's not the Messiah: he's a very naughty boy!".
The most (in)famous of the Monty Python films and often held up as their best film, I've always found this to be inferior to it's immediate predecessor "The Quest for the Holy Grail".
While I also tend to come down on the side of Michael Palin(?) in the infamous TV debate surrounding the movie - that it does NOT make fun of Christianity itself - there's also no denying that it does cut very close to the bone, so it's not hard to see why it was so controversial on its release and was even banned from being shown in some locations.
The best bit, in my opinion, is the whole "What did the Romans ever do for us?" gag.
