The funniest Python flick is also the most engaging as a film. What distinguishes this movie from most madcap comedies, I think, is its potent sense of what religion really is. And how it presents its theme through a story that runs parallel with the story of Christ.
That's what the wowsers failed to notice (if they saw the movie at all); that Brian ISN'T the messiah and the movie never pretends that he is. It just wants to hold up a mirror to how we as a people tend to seek easy answers and when we don't get any, we are vitriolic.
