Review of Life Itself (2014) by Rocky R — 10 Jul 2014
Roger Ebert was the most iconic film critic that has ever lived. His style, and love for cinema brought something unique to the criticism of film. Life Itself is a great documentary on Roger Ebert, but I must admit at times, I wanted a more in depth look at his life, and the way it presents the material, the filmmakers at times take certain specifics of Ebert's career and in a way, it can leave you wanting more.
I'm not saying this is a bad film, quite on the contrary, but considering that Roger Ebert helped shaped film criticism for what it is today. Despite at times lacking, Life Itself manages to be an entertaining, captivating look at Ebert's career despite a few lacking moments.
This is a highly watchable affair, especially for film fans and readers of Ebert's reviews. Agreed with him or not, Roger Ebert had a terrific impact on the way films were seen and enjoyed. Along with his colleague, Gene Siskel, they both became popular critics and managed to give insightful, at times controversial reviews, as their opinions often clashed and they were not afraid of giving an honest review despite what the public would say.
This is a great documentary about an iconic critic that wasn't afraid of speaking his mind. Ebert brought a new level of talent to film criticism, a much needed honestly, and he wasn't afraid of telling it like it is.
Life Itself is a solid documentary, a film that ought to be seen by anyone who enjoys cinema for what it is, as it is sure to inspire up and coming critics as well as give insight on the main himself.
However, like I said, I felt that at times, the film did lack, and some key segment's from Roger Ebert's life weren't given enough attention, but as a whole, Life itself is a well crafted documentary well worth your time, and for what it is, one of 2014's finest documentaries.
